Meet the Team Introducing our Farm Guru, City Greens co-founder Jen Levy

our vision

City Greens Vision

For the last few years, we have been hard at work on a passion project near and dear to us all - building an educational farm in the heart of Los Angeles. We strive to increase wellness, food security, environmental stewardship and community connection… all strikingly more pressing in light of the pandemic.

Our Grow Local initiative was created to directly address some of the local impacts of the pandemic, utilizing vacant commercial space for vertical growing to donate nutrient-rich, highly flavorful fresh food to those in need.

Ultimately we plan to create an outdoor farm which will strengthen community connection with each other and our environment through hands-on participation, engagement and education. We will grow beautiful fresh produce for local residents and restaurants, and the farm will become an outdoor classroom and community center, a place for all members of the community to come together safely; from students to seniors, for families and friends. All will be welcome to join in the growing process, get their hands dirty, enjoy some fresh air and tap into a world of wellness resources.

Our Story

Our dedication to sustainability and desire to heal the planet starts right here in our hometown. We have traveled the world to identify the technology and partners to bring this to life and increase wellness, food security, and environmental stewardship.

Founding City Greens Community Farm in January 2020 was the culmination of years of conversations, research, and planning about the imperative to shift from traditional agri-business to local, community-based farming.

With the arrival of our first hydroponic shipping container, our plan to create an outdoor, educational farm is well on its way.  This site will offer opportunities for in-person, hands-on community participation, engagement, connection to nature, and experiential education.  Focusing on sustainable agriculture, environmental stewardship, taking care of our neighbors, and caring for the Earth are some of the values we hope to instill in every farm program.  Using farming as a tool, we will uplift the community and use food and nature to share stories, build community, and help students of all ages find a connection to their food and the land.

Working with Mandel Day School in Cleveland, Ohio,  Beverly Hills Unified School District, Temple Emanuel of Beverly Hills, Claris Health, The Menorah Housing Foundation, and the SBCC (Strength Based Community Change) I Heart Farming team, we have had the privilege of teaching over 750 kids and adults.

Jen Levy has been an educator for 20 years. It was through designing a community garden program and teaching children to think outside the box that her passion for farming was born. A true advocate for our Mother Earth and deeply concerned for our planet’s future, Jen continues to be an active educational leader making a positive impact. After participating in the 2015 Environmental Leadership Program National Fellowship, Jen knew that her teaching job would no longer fulfill her hunger for agricultural knowledge.

Wanting to gain more farming education and practical experience, she spent two years working at Lettuce Heads Farm in Wellington, Ohio, gaining hands-on experience with aquaponics. At the same time, she worked to provide safe water access to people in need as Manager of Education Programs at the non-profit Drink Local. Drink Tap. She moved on to serve as Farm and Education Manager at Ekar Farm and Community Garden in Denver where she gained the skills to successfully run a farm. Now she brings her enthusiasm and resources back home to serve her own community in Southern California Jen is a champion for local, fresh, healthy food and is looking forward to fostering a space for community building and positive change.

Hope Levy-Biehl has been committed to health and wellness for over 20 years. Since graduating UCLA law school in 1998, she has worked as a health care attorney, advising hospitals, laboratories, pharmacies and other providers and suppliers on their day-to-day operations and the complex regulatory issues they face. Hope is a trusted advisor and problem solver for her clients, helping them enhance their business and respond to challenges.

It was through her work in the healthcare industry that Hope realized the importance of focusing on creating wellness and not just treating disease. On a personal level, Hope has maintained her own health and wellness (and definitely her sanity) by staying physically active, spending time outdoors and eating locally grown whole foods. When Jen became a farmer, Hope immediately connected to her vision for healing the world and the environment through cultivating healthy, local food and making it available on a larger scale. Hope is thrilled to be part of the powerful, female threesome bringing this vision and City Greens to life in Southern California and beyond.
